“Let the Art In:” Inspiration for a more ‘artful life’

Let the Art In' leaves the reader with thoughts to consider about experiencing a more colorful and fulfilling life.

As we move toward a society that is heavily influenced by technology, and move away from face to face interaction, it is easy for young people to lose sight of who they are. Everyday stressors aside, social media sets the bar incredibly high for young people, and many won’t rest until they have achieved whatever they perceive as ‘perfection.’ With this warped perception, young people are often plagued by mental illness, a growing epidemic across the country. How can we fight mental illness in a safe way while also raising awareness? Look no further, because adapting a more artful life for yourself or your child, will lead to answers and benefits you never thought possible.

"Free Time is Me Time"

The first step to finding wellness through art is to allot a time and space to be one with yourself, separate from your everyday routine. Although, in time, art making will hopefully become a part of your routine. In terms of youths, we should advocate for the growth of the ‘youth public sphere,’ which is their space and time for “playfulness, exploration, development of personal initiative, and just plain chatting between young people and caring adults.” These opportunities allow youths to explore the world around them at their own pace, something that is diminished under the pressures of strict curricula, performance-based education systems, and socio-economic status. Once time has been set aside for youths to pause and be free, it can be filled with beneficial activities that promote well-being.

"Beauty is in the Eye of the Artist"

Based on a person’s interests, art is a wonderful way to fill any amount of time that is anticipated to heal. Moreover, the term ‘art’ is not limited to fine arts (drawing, painting, and sculpting). Art encompasses writing, photography, dance, theatre, music, animation, fashion, and so much more. There are pretty much no wrong answers in art, which makes it a great tool for people who have a wide range of interests, or who are just figuring out what they enjoy. Once you find the art modality that sparks joy in your heart, you are ready to use it as a guide on your journey to healing.

"Heal Through Feel"

Personally, my connection to the arts has made me who I am. In times when I doubt myself and feel like the whole world is against me, I think back to my work in theatre and I feel prideful. I feel whole. “Art, either the process of creating it or viewing others’ artworks, is used to help people explore their emotions, develop self-awareness, cope with stress, boost self-esteem, and work on social skills.” When our words aren’t working or when we can’t understand someone’s needs, the art can speak for us. Allowing art to take the burden off your shoulders will give you more strength to conquer life’s everyday challenges.
